This county is situated south-east in the lower peninsula, and is bounded north by Genesee and Lapeer counties, east by Macomb County, south by Wayne County, and west by Livingston County. It ocntaines 16 townships, to wit: Royal Oak, Southfield, Farmington, Novi, Lyon, Troy, Bloomfield, East and West Commerce, Milford, Highland, White Lake, Waterford, Pontiac, Avon, Oakland, Orion, Independence, Springfield, Rose, Holly, Groveland, Brandon, Oxford and Addison. It is traversed by the Clinton River and its several tributaries, also branches of the Huron, Rouge, Shiawassee and Flint Rivers. The surface is undulating, in some townships, hilly, and diversified with numerous lakes in the county, many of them apparently having no outlet, but entirely surrounded by high, gravelly or sandy banks; in many places, several of these lakes can be seen at one view, presenting to the eye a beautiful prospect. This county is one of the richest agricultural counties in the state, and the farms are in high state of cultivation. The soil is extremely fertile, and yeilds the very best of wheat, Indian corn and potatoes. The Detroit and Milwaukee railway intersects the county through the townships of Royal Oak, Bloomfield, Pontiac, Waterford, Springfield, Rose and Holly. It contains 4,300 farm, 200 manufactories, and a population of 39,270. The county seat is Pontiac.

Pontiac
A post village in Pontiac Township, and the seat of jutice of Oakland County, is situated on the Clinton River, 25 miles north northwest of Detroit, and on the line of the Detroit and Mimlwaukee railway. It is a place of active and flourishing trade, and onee of the chief woll markets in the state. The township is drained by the Clinton River and its tributaries, which fed by numerous small lakes or ponds supply the very best of power. The surface is hilly and diversified. Soil sandy in some places, though generally very productive. The villagecontains 51 stores of different kinds, a court house, jail, academy, Union school, foundries, a depot for agricultural implements, machine shops, several flouring mills and factories, six churches, three hotels, of which the HOdges HOuse ranks as first class, and two news papers offices, the "Pontiac Gazette" and "Jacksonian" both weekly issues. It is 67 miles from Lansing. Population of village is about 3,000 and the Township about 2,000 persons.
